Texas Holdem Hand Odds

Although luck and skill both play a part in poker, skill is definitely the predominant factor. One of the most important traits distinguishing a professional Texas Holdem player is the knowledge of the mathematics behind poker - and more specifically - how to account for Texas Holdem hand odds. Typically, inexperienced players unknowingly make lots of poor decisions in poker when the odds are unfavorable, and this is one of the mistakes that skilled players are able to exploit.

How poker odds work

It's not too hard to learn how odds work - the tricky part is to apply them in actual play. To find out the odds of your current Texas Holdem hand, you need to know your "outs", that is, how many cards out of those left in the deck that improve your hand.

Example: with four cards to a flush on the flop in Texas Hold'em, there are nine unseen cards left in the deck which gives you the flush. You have seen five out of 52 in the deck, which leaves 47 unaccounted for. Now just divide the 38 non-outs by the 9 outs and you have the (simplified) odds of 4, 22: 1 for the turn. With over-cards to the board, you could also have a few extra outs, which of course also improves the odds.

Theory and practice behind hand odds

When you know the odds, you need to adjust your play to the pot odds in any given situation. The pot odds is the ratio between the size of the pot and the bet/call. If the pot contains $20 and your opponent bets $5, for instance, the pot odds would be $20 + $5 (the size of the pot) / $5 (the bet) = 5 (pot odds 1: 5).

To consistently make profitable decisions, you need pot odds or implied odds that are better than the hand odds at the moment. In the above example, a call with Texas Holdem hands such as flush or straight draws would clearly be profitable, but if your opponent makes a much larger bet it might not be.
